Kill a Dummy, Get some Wood
On This date in history, Near Frisco, New Mexico, deputy sheriff Elfego Baca holds off a gang of 80 Texan cowboys who want to kill him for arresting Charles McCarthy. Isn't that the wooden dummy that sat on Edgar Bergen's lap? If those men were after Charlie, what exactly was it that they were trying to get to? (Not that there's anything wrong with it.) My guess is that these 80 cowboys had been on the trail a LONG TIME, and they were willing to get their hands anything other than reigns.... even wood, they definitely needed to get down to whittlin'.
